During the Victorian period a rage for extreme smallness militated against the Toy Manchester and there was a time also when other breeds were crossed with him to the breed's disadvantage, but today's Toy has no blood other than the Manchester's. A litter of normal-sized Manchester produced one puppy that remained small. He attracted considerable attention and the breeder tried for more of the same.

Inbreeding got the weight down to as little as 214 pounds, but the dogs lacked stamina and received a reputation for delicacy. Sounder breeders didn't try for extreme smallness and developed the breed as it exists today, one with considerable charm that is winning adherents all over the country.
The Toy, like the standard-sized, is a short-coated jet black and rich mahogany tan dog with the colors well defined. Both have narrow, almost flat heads, straight legs, sparkling eyes. It is recommended by the parent club that at dog shows Toys entered in open classes be divided according to weight-under 7 pounds and 7 to 12 pounds.
Similar dogs existed in many sections of England other than Manchester, so that the breed's name is not strictly accurate.
