Some of the Toy breeds are miniature replicas of bigger dogs from which they have descended, scaled down to meet the requirements of fashion or whim. One such is the Italian Greyhound, whose lineage goes back two thousand years in his present form.
Italian Greyhounds History
He belongs to one of the oldest of dog families. There were Greyhounds of various types in the period between 7000 to 5000 B.C. The Italian Greyhound was bred down from the smooth coated variety known now simply as “Greyhound.”

Evidence that the Italian Greyhound goes far back in antiquity has been uncovered by archaeologists. He was a favourite of the Romans and an associate of royalty. The breed reached Scotland through the Italian consort of James II and thrived there despite the harsh climate, decidedly unfriendly to a delicately built dog covered only by hair that was satin-like in texture.
The same coat qualities that were presumably unsuited to the rugged Scottish climate make him a superb pet and house dog for the apartment-dweller in America, since there are no long hairs to shed and there is no body odor. The dog is clean by nature, another boon to the city man.
The breed won a wide following in America during the Victorian era. It was recognised by the A.K.C. in 1886. In 1926 it stood tenth among the fifteen Toy breeds in registrations, but sagged off thereafter. Now the cycle of popularity is swinging upward again and the little Greyhound is bidding for a high place among the Toys. Persistent efforts by his fanciers may well return him to his former standing.
