The Western world learned of the Japanese Spaniels after Commodore Perry's visit to Japan in 1853. There he received a number of the highly-prized dogs as presents. Two were put aboard ship for Queen Victoria of England. The rest he sent to the United States. However, it remained for later trade to spread the breed in the Occident.
The Japanese Spaniel is a small, dainty. appearing dog with a profuse coat. He carries his heavily-feathered tail proudly curved over his back. He has a stylish, high-stepping gait when moving. The head is large for his size, the muzzle short, while the nostrils are wide and open.

There is some agreement that the breed, although a favourite with the aristocracy of Japan, actually originated in China or Korea. The supposition is that the Japanese Spaniel shared his ancestry with the short-coated Pug and the long-coated Pekingese, two other small Oriental breeds. There are, however, decided structural differences among the three.

In the United States the breed has had to contend with severe handicaps since being admitted to the A.K.C. Stud Book in 1888. Distemper took a great toll until satisfactory inoculation was developed. Earthquakes in Japan wiped out breeding kennels and war halted importation.
In the 1880s a Japanese Spaniel Club was organised but it faded out. The present Japanese Spaniel Club of America was established in 1912. The breed has had fluctuations from lows in the 1920s to highs in the 1930s, then low again during World War II. Now once more it is on an upward trend.

Characteristic
Happy and hardy housedog; good with children and other pets; loyal and affectionate, eager to please. Color : black and white or red and white. Weight: 4-6 lb. Coat type: profuse, long and straight, need daily attention with a bristle brush and occasional bathing. Exercise: loves a good run but must not be allowed to overtire itself.
