Chihuahuas

Swift-moving dog, the smallest of the toys, one of the most popular and one whose origins are obscured in controversy is the Chihuahua. Some say he is the oldest of the North American breeds, tracing hack to the Toltecs of ancient Mexico. Others, backed by archaeological and paleontological records, maintain there were no dogs at all in Mexico until Cortez came and that the techichi, the Chihuahua’s presumed ancestor, was a prairie dog, no true dog but a rodent.

There is speculation that the breed came from the Orient via Spanish trade routes. Chinese emigrating to Texas in the 1890s with their small dogs also are given as an explanation. Getting into the realm of fact, the first one registered with the A.K.C. was in 1903 by H. Rayner of El Paso. He registered three more in 1905.

In 1923 the Chihuahua Club of America was organized and has promoted the breed successfully ever since. Despite his delicate appearance, the dog has been found able to withstand cold climate, has become popular as a house pet and, to a lesser degree, as a show dog.

There are two coat varieties—the smooth and the long. The dogs are very small, some known to weigh as little as 1 pound but with 2 to 4 pounds preferred and the maximum allowed by the standard, 6 pounds. The coats in both varieties are soft, in the smooth close and glossy, in the long flat or slightly curled.

Lacking the physical attributes that have made other breeds great in the sporting field, the Chihuahua nevertheless has proved himself the peer of any in one branch of competition—obedience. In it innate bright intelligence has carried many specimens to top ranking.
