Edit
The English Setter once enjoyed a tremendous vogue in the field and today, although surpassed in numbers at the average trial by the Pointer, remains one of America's foremost bird dogs and as beautiful a dog on the bench as exists. He is a sweet-tempered, mild-mannered dog with fanatic loyalty to the owner that makes him the ideal one-man hunter.

Bird-dog training was being applied to these Setters in England as long as four hundred years ago. Through various strains they have been developed along two main lines—for show beauty and for field utility—and in each department the English Setter has come through with aplomb.

It is probable that the English Setter had its origin in the old land Spaniels Of Spain, with some evidence pointing to a mixture of the large Water Spaniel, the Spanish Pointer and the Springer Spaniel. Careful cultivation produced a dog with exceptional ability both to find and point game.
History
Englishmen named Edward Laverack and R. L. Purcell Llewellin. who operated between approximately 1825 and 1875, were among the foremost breeders of the modern dog. The strains of both attracted a great deal of attention on both sides of the ocean.
Llewellin bought some of Laverack's best show dogs, crossed them with new blood from northern England and produced dogs that were particularly successful in the field. There was a time when the Llewellin strain dominated the American field scene and many of the current dogs have a preponderance of that blood. The Laverack strain developed along show lines and the name is still heard in bench competition.
