Clumber Spaniel

Heaviest of the Spaniel breeds and one of the first to become an American citizen is the Clumber. The breed history in America goes back to the days before the Revolution, when sportsmen among the English settlers brought their dogs with them. It was well established by the time the American Kennel Club was created in 1884.

Clumber Spaniel
The Clumber is an easy-going, companionable dog who appeals particularly to those sportsmen who want a slow-moving dog with a great nose for retrieving his game. Being big, up to 65 pounds in the male, speed is not for him. He's a long, low, heavy-looking dog. White predominates in the coat  color, with lemon or orange markings. The fewer markings on the body the better, says the standard.

Although the breed was one of the first to enter this country, it has become classified as a rare breed. In 1948 there were only seven dogs registered. It suffered severely during the war, when it was impossible to replenish breeding stock, but in all probability will climb back to a moderately high place in the breed popularity scale. A cross between the Basset Hound and one of the Spaniels of Spain produced the Clumber.

Sportsmen who desired a dog of unexcelled nose, low stature and weight with strength developed the breed in France, from where it spread to England and then to America. The breed has been kept by Britain's Royal Family for 100 years.

In the early days of Spaniel trials, Clumbers usually struck the dominant notes. In those trials all the Spaniel breeds competed as one. Later they were divided according to breeds and the Clumbers faded from favor."
