The Brittany Spaniel is a French hunting dog of rare excellence tracing originally to the Spaniels of Spain and can be classified as one of the "obscure" breeds in that it is not widely known. It wasn't recognized by the A.K.C. until 1934 and didn't get into the dog show limelight until the late Thirties. The Brittany has been making steady strides under the sponsorship of the parent club, the American Brittany Spaniel Club.

As a field dog the Brittany has unique characteristics. The almost tailless dog is an all-around worker, not only pointing with proficiency but being trained to retrieve game as well. The parent club has tried to preserve its hunting qualities by encouraging field trials and speciality shows, with the same dogs in each.

A French sportsman, Arthur Enaud, is given credit for reviving a breed that at the start of this century had suffered deterioration. He undertook a number of crosses, interspersed with line breeding, to achieve the pleasing appearance that is now characteristic. The Italian Bracco and the Braque de Bourbonnais, two Pointer breeds, were used to advantage. Careful adherence to line and selective breeding kept the traditional coat and other qualities despite the use of the Pointers.
The Brittany is an extremely wide-ranging dog for a Spaniel, approximating though not equalling that of the Pointer and Setter in some cases. He has thus considerable versatility in the field, hunting close in heavy cover, ranging far in open country. He is a leggy dog, rugged but not cumbersome, quick in movement but not light in bone nor yet very heavy. He has a sensitive nature.
