American Water Spaniels

One of America's few native breeds is one of the nation's foremost aides to the hunter seeking waterfowl and upland game. Although known in the United States for generations (there is a legend lie came with Columbus but it is legend and nothing more), the American Water Spaniel did not become a part of the official American pure-bred picture until 1910, when he was admitted to the Stud Book.

American Water Spaniels

The American Water Spaniel is a curly-coated solid liver or dark chocolate dog with remarkable swimming prowess, a perfect nose for game and a busily-wagging tail who stands about midway between the American Cocker Spaniel and the English Springer Spaniel in size.

There is no definite date for the emergence of the breed as a distinct type. However, the American Water Spaniel was breeding true many years before the Civil War. He was a favourite among all the gun dogs then known.

His popularity never achieved the heights of some of the other Spaniels, possibly because there have been no concerted efforts to publicise the breed. It is probable it will rise as his qualities as a hunting dog became better known throughout the United States.

It is likely that the American Water Spaniel developed from the old English Water Spaniel, the Irish Water Spaniel and the Curly-Coated Retriever. The dog inherited much that was good from all three.

The Irish dog may have contributed most toward the breed's swimming ability, which been described as similar to that of a seal. The density of the marceled-like coat helps in the dog's water work, as it does for protection against weather and rough cover of every description.
