Sussex Spaniel

The Sussex Spaniel has been retarded in the favor of American sportsmen by his lack of speed. That very slowness may be a virtue for less impetuous seekers of the game and certainly, the dog is excellent for some types of rough shooting. He is a heavy-set breed, about the weight of a Clumber, and about the same in speed.

The coat of the Sussex is a rich golden liver. The standard says of the color that it is a certain sign of the purity of the breed. Dark liver or puce denotes unmistakably a recent cross with the black or other variety of Field Spaniel The dog is rather massive, muscular but free moving and is characterized by a nice tail action, He is inclined to give tongue on seent.

Those who like to make deductions say that this inclination indicates that somewhere in the Sussex background is a hound and a Pointer, although not the faster members of either variety. A Mr. Fuller of Brightling, England, had the first and most important kennel of Sussex Spaniels and it was he who developed the peculiar golden tinge in the coat. Phineas Bullock, who was notable in the development of Field Spaniels, also had a great deal to do with the development of the Sussex.

The breed goes back a long way in A.K.C. records, having been recognized in 1878. That year the only specimen registered was a Canadian-bred one. The breed never has climbed high in American registrations, but it has persisted through the years as a normal, attractive dog with a good nose and, when properly trained, as a Retriever. The Sussex is a long, low, level dog with an abundant coat that is flat or slightly waved. The legs are moderately well-feathered.
