Edit
There was a time when the Poodle was regarded as a sissy of dogdom because of his dandified appearance and a lamentable practice of tying the hair over the eyes with ribbons. Actually the dog has intelligence that approaches the human, is a star in obedience competition, a superb companion and an outstanding swimmer that has made him useful in retrieving. He doesn't need much exercise, thus can live comfortably in the city. His consistent show-ring victories attest his style and showmanship.

The various styles of clipping the Poodle go back 300 years or more, when the dog was shaved to facilitate swimming for its function as a water dog, yet not shaved enough to bring discomfort to the dog in the water. In time the clipping or shaving became less functional and more ornamental.

Some think the Poodle originated in Germany, others that it was the original Water Spaniel of Spain. In France he is called the Caniche, derived from chien canne or duck dogs. The Poodle has been the national dog of France for many years through its great popularity there, hence the name "French Poodle.” The English word "Poodle” probably derives from the German "pudel.”
For show-ring purposes Poodles are divided in the non-sporting group into two sizes-Standards. over 15 inches high at the shoulder, and Minia. tures, under 15 inches but over 10 inches. Those under 10 inches form a third variety that are classified as Toys. All are identical otherwise. The Miniatures were bred down by the British when the bigger variety's usefulness as a hunter over, perhaps to make a more suitable ladies' companion.
