Papillon

When powdered ladies in the courts of France had their elegant forms painted by the masters of the day, a Papillon was almost always part of the ensemble. There's a story that when Marie Antoinette was being tumbreled to the guillotine, a Papillon was hiding beneath her skirts, whining with the sense of impending disaster.

Papillon
“Papillon" in France means butterfly. In the case of the dog it refers to the ears. Carried high and wide apart and well feathered, they resemble the opened wings of a butterfly. Originating from the Spaniels of Spain and Italy, the little dog developed into a darling of Continental courts and declined with human aristocracy during the French Revolution.

The Papillon is a graceful little Toy Spaniel, slender of body, lively and graceful in action. The delicacy of his appearance hides a bold nature that does not blanch at the prospect of fighting a rat, which he has been known to do with success.

Within the small frame is a great deal of spirit, loyalty and the other attributes that have made all dogs beloved of mankind.

The breed was recognized in America in 1915 and has had its fluctuations in common with many others. When importations were suspended during World War II it dropped far down in the registration standing, but has been coming back steadily.

Two varieties are recognized. In one, the ears are carried upright at an oblique angle to the head, like the opened wings of a butterfly as previously mentioned. The other variety, known as Epagneul Nain, has ears that drop. The Papillon's tail is beautiful.

Characteristic of Papillon:

The Butterfly Dog, named after its large fringed ears, affectionate and obedient; possessive towards owner, can be jealous.
Color: Always parti-color, white with patches of any color.
Height: 8-11 in.
Coat type: Abundant, long and flowing; needs daily grooming
Exercise: Enjoys a run but is undemanding
