Edit
The English Cocker Spaniel is the ancestor of the American Cocker. Once in America he almost lost his identity through interbreeding both here and in England with the dog that has become so tremendously popular in the United States.
However, the English type never lost his admirers and supporters. The bigger, heavier dog is a great worker in the field and proves it at field trials. There have been determined efforts to reestablish the Cocker as a gun dog during the past few years and the English variety has become a leader at Spaniel events.

It took a while to break the English dog from his numerous progeny of the American type. There had been dissatisfaction for some years among fanciers of the English dog because the standard obviously had been written to suit the American. The bigger dog seldom went up in shows. Then, at a speciality show for the English in October, 1935, the English Cocker Spaniel Club of America was organized.
The club approached the A.K.C. for separate recognition. Officers of the A.K.C. agreed that if the English-type dog was bred separately for a period of years, the recognition would be granted. Ten years after organization of the English Cocker Spaniel Club an official standard for the breed was approved and in October, 1946, the separate status was established. The breed has been proving his worth and distinctiveness ever since.
When a good English Cocker is working in the field his tail moves incessantly, giving the impression of a dog that not only is bred for hunting but really enjoys it. The dog has a short body and strong limbs.
