One of the smallest of the Terriers and one of the boldest and strongest is the Cairn. He's a short-legged dog with courage built into a nature that is tractable and quiet. In his Scottish origins there was deliberate design for the kind of dog he became.
Known in Britain centuries ago, he reached his highest development on the Isle of Skye off the Scottish coast, There hunters developed the kind of dog that could squeeze through small chinks of cairns, rock-pile monuments to hero warriors, in pursuit of small game. Spunk and drive were demanded besides small size and the Cairn had both.

The breed is one of the most adaptable of dogs. The Cairn has a coat designed for the rigors of an unfriendly native weather, yet it does not unfit him for hot-climate living. Basically a dog for the outdoors, he can live in a city apartment comfortably. Never a dog for the masses, he has had surges of popularity. The highest registration year in America was 1936, when the total was 580.
The A.K.C. recognized the Cairn in 1913. A select group of amateur fanciers made him its own from the start. Under their leadership, the breed has won a respected place in the American canine picture.
There has never been much effort to promote the breed on a commercial basis in this country and as a result it never has climbed high in numbers, but the Cairn's personality keeps winning friends. The dog has a longer body than the Scottish Terrier or the West Highland White. He is substantially boned without heaviness. The head is shorter and wider than any other 1 terrier's, giving a general foxy expression.
