Briard

The Briard has been bred in France as a distinct type since at least the Twelfth Century. Records mention it as the Chien Berger de Brie, or Shepherd Dog of Brie. The name derives from the old Province, but whether this substantially-built, medium-sized, dark-colored dog actually originated there is open to question.

Briard

There were farm dogs in other countries, particularly in Poland and Germany, that were similar and probably related. The breed centuries ago was maintained on large estates. His daring in fighting wolves and robbers has been commemorated on tapestries. When the French Revolution broke up the landed gentry, the Briard became a farm worker.

Early in this century some progressive farmers formed Les Amis du Briard, a club that drew up a standard for the breed. In 1922 virtually the same standard was adopted by the Briard Club of America. It is still official and there never have been any real efforts for changes. The standard calls for a lithe, muscular, well-proportioned dog fitted for field work. Adult males stand 23 to 27 inches at the shoulder.

The Briard has some unusual characteristics. One is its coat. The fairly heavy outer coat never sheds under normal conditions and the inner hairs, although coming out, do not spread and can be combed out. Another is that the dog should never be bathed, also under normal conditions. The breed can stand the most severe extremes of cold and heat.

As in the case of others of Europe's dogs, troops of World War I "discovered” the Briard. They were superb battle dogs for the French Army, rugged beyond most in physical strength and the ability to withstand harsh conditions.
