Edit
The Vogue the boxer enjoys in America is of relatively recent origin. The strong, clean-limbed dog that ranks so high today failed to impress when the first efforts to introduce him were made in the early 1900s. Even in Germany he didn’t begin his modern development until the decade between 1890 and 1900.
The history
Show winnings, first achieved in the non-sporting group because the Boxer was considered a kind of bulldog, by Sigurd von Dom, imported by Mrs.Miriam Hostetter Young, who became Mrs.William Z.Breed, in 1934, caught the American imagination. John Phelps Wagner of Milwaukee, then imported Sigurd’s grandson. Dorian von Marienhof, which began to score, too, and added fuel to the fire.

The fire has been blazing since, intensified in recent years by best-in-show, victories at the great Westminster show in New York. One of the winners was Wagner’s Ch.Mazelaine’s Zazarac Brandy in 1949.
The boxer comes of fighting stock and looks it. He’s a medium-sized, smooth-haired dog with a square figure, strong limbs, well-developed muscles and colour that may be fawn or brindle. He has a deep chest and a black mask covering the blunt but not “bull-doggy” muzzle. He’s a good dog in a fight, coming by his ability naturally because his forebears were bull-baiters, but he is renowned for love and faithfulness to his master.
While his ancestry is obscure, it is assumed he is the result of a cross between an English Bulldog and a Great Dane. Other authorities have noted a similarity between the early Boxers and the “Chiens de Boucher” or “Butcher Dogs” of France, Belgium and parts of Germany.
