The very name "Bloodhound" strikes terror into a criminal because of its gory implications. The power of scenting that almost seems supernatural does not contribute to his ease. The name is unfortunate because ferocity is alien to the Bloodhound, but his trailing ability is undisputedly the highest of any. The Bloodhound is the only animal whose mute testimony is accepted in American courts.
Very likely the name derives from Twelfth Century records in which the dogs were referred to as "blooded hounds," thoroughbreds of aristocratic breeding. The Bloodhound is among the most tractable of dogs though one of the most powerful. He is somewhat shy and sensitive to both kindness and correction by his master, although some used by penitentiaries can be taught to attack.

The trailing of criminals and, before the Civil War, slaves, probably has been overemphasized. The breed's most concrete contributions have been in the field of finding lost persons. Its feats have been fantastic, many of the tales true. One hound, Nick Carter, successfully followed a trail that was 105 hours old, an awesome example of uncanny scenting ability in a dog.
The Bloodhound provided the stock from which many other hounds and gun-dogs acquired their scenting ability. Not one of the other breeds has been able to equal the old master, however. Claudius Aelianus wrote in the Third Century A. D. of a dog "that was unrivalled for its scenting powers and which was possessed of such great determination that it would not leave the trail until the quarry was located." That was the Bloodhound. He hasn't changed through succeeding centuries.
